Baltinache

The Baltinache lagoons are a series of small, intensely turquoise pools hidden in the Atacama salt flat. The water is so rich in salt and minerals that you float without effort, surrounded by white crusted shores and a silence that belongs only to the desert. Most visitors to San Pedro never reach Baltinache: access is limited, the road is unpaved, and the lagoons feel genuinely remote. You move between pools at your own pace, floating, walking the salt crust, and watching the colour of the water change as the sun shifts. It is one of the quietest, strangest places in the Atacama.
