There are corners of the world that are not visited to collect photographs, but to change the way we look at life. Places where the Earth speaks to us through its most beautiful scars.

If not long ago we let ourselves be captivated by the hidden magic of La Garrotxa in Catalonia, feeling the green heartbeat of its dormant volcanoes and the silence of its medieval stones, today we cross the ocean to give ourselves over to an absolute contrast. We travel to San Pedro de Atacama, in the north of Chile. We move from the refuge of the forests to the immensity of the driest desert on the planet, a canvas of salt, fire and stars where time stands still and the soul, inevitably, expands.

Get your travel log ready. We leave behind the warmth of the peninsula to go deep into the mysticism of the Chilean altiplano. Do you dare to cross the mirror?

San Pedro de Atacama: The mystical heartbeat of the driest desert in the world

There are places on the planet that are not measured in kilometres, but in the intensity with which they make your soul vibrate. That is San Pedro de Atacama. The simple act of saying its name evokes an echo of mystery and endless horizons. As you go deeper into its geography, you discover that reality surpasses any fantasy: you are standing before the driest and oldest desert in the world, a land of extreme contrasts where guardian volcanoes, salt flats that look like endless mirrors and lagoons of a blue so intense it seems unreal all live side by side.

This journey requires you to stop time. To embrace the magic of this oasis in the north of Chile, you need at least 3 to 4 full days. The adventure usually begins by landing at Calama Airport, from where a road journey of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes immerses you in a silent immensity, preparing you to discover a corner of the planet where the earth and the cosmos merge.

1. The Valle de la Luna: Walking on the silence of space

Going into the Valle de la Luna at sunset is not an excursion; it is, literally, setting foot on cosmic ground. Its formations of salt, clay and rock, sculpted with millennial patience by the wind and the water, create a landscape so alien that it makes you shiver. When the sun begins to hide behind the Cordillera de la Sal, the desert breaks into speech in the language of colours: the ochres turn into violets, pinks and golds. It is a spectacle you contemplate in absolute silence, feeling the immensity of the universe and the overwhelming beauty of our own fragility.

2. The Géiseres del Tatio: The awakening of the earth between steam and fire

To feel the living force of the planet you have to get up early and climb to more than 4,200 metres of altitude, where the Géiseres del Tatio are hidden. Arriving before dawn, braving the extreme cold of the altiplano, brings a reward that purifies the soul. In the half-light, gigantic columns of white steam burst out from the depths of the earth, breaking through the frozen surface in a hypnotic dance. Seeing the first ray of sun filter through the steam is witnessing the birth of the world, a poetic reminder of the fire that beats beneath our feet.

3. The altiplanic lagoons and the Salar de Atacama: The reflection of the sky in the water

In the immensity of the Chilean altiplano, the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons appear like a miracle. Protected by imposing volcanoes, their turquoise blue waters contrast with the golden paja brava on the shore, creating a visual harmony that looks painted by hand. Further down, in the Salar de Atacama, the earth cracks into crusts of white salt that hold the mystical Laguna Chaxa. Here, the silence is broken only by the flapping wings of the pink flamingos that defy the aridity of their surroundings, giving you a postcard of pure life in the middle of the desert.

Notes for your travel log (Advice from the heart)

Disconnecting: Let the journey from Calama clear your mind. As the road descends towards the oasis of San Pedro, you will notice the air becoming drier and the sky opening up in a clean, eternal blue.

The rhythm of the desert: Don't rush. San Pedro de Atacama demands slow travel from you. Spend the middle hours of the day resting in the shade of its dirt and adobe streets, talking with the locals and absorbing the Andean energy.

The magical moment: When night falls, the desert offers you its greatest treasure. Atacama has one of the clearest skies on the planet. Taking an astronomy tour here is not just seeing stars; it is looking out into the immensity of the universe and understanding that we are part of something infinite.
